Starting with your rendition of U2’s “All I Want is You” for our first dance, which Ross and I continue to talk about because it was (I can’t believe I’m saying this…) BETTER than the original, you continued to nail every song throughout the night. Other highlights were Sledgehammer, I Wanna Dance with Somebody , and of course, Shut Up and Dance. Honestly, every song was fabulous, and the entire band had an energetic, fun-filled, entertaining presence. There was never a dull moment, and the dance floor was packed all night. I can’t say enough good things about this band!! From the very first time I talked to Ken, he was professional, helpful and very responsive. The months leading up to the wedding included picking the set lists and what not to include–he made it all a breeze. They did everything they said they would do with very little direction which allowed me to enjoy my wedding hassle-free. And can I tell you how amazing they sounded?! We looked at many from this site and all seemed pretty much the same and way too expensive. Then we saw the Funktion live. They were great with us and did not pressure us. We were very comfortable enjoying their company after a show they did in November. When they say world class – it is for real!!! Blew us away when we saw them in November and then for our big day on March 7th!!
It was if we were dancing to Stevie Wonder, Pink, Sly and The Family Stone, Bruno Mars… all at the same time-live!! The repertoire is so deep – there was nothing they could not play. My Fiancee and I heard about the The Funktion from a friend who lives in NYC. Everyone was ecstatic and when they performed at our wedding a few weeks ago. The joy amongst our family and friends was 10 times what we could have dreamed! We dealt with Ken in the band and he was super responsive and professional throughout the whole booking/planning process. We hated the idea of booking a band through a booking agent and having zero contact with the musicians throughout the booking process. We had Kens cell phone number and he would happily step away from what he was doing to answer our questions. About a month before our wedding, Ken called us to run through the schedule from top to bottom and went through every little detail thoroughly. This was awesome

At my daughter’s request (who had seen the Funktion before at a wedding) I went with this band and her rave reviews about them. I met Ken and he was agreeable and did everything we/ I wanted, including special songs. It was a bittersweet night as I had lost my mother the night before, and I was really just going thru the motions, but I can tell you that EVERYONE there,did nothing but DANCE and party the whole night which is what my daughter and son-in-law wanted. I’m not sure much of the food was eaten, because not many people were sitting down!!!!. At the end of the night, as people came up to thank my husband and I, they said it was the best wedding they had ever been to,because of the atomsphere the happiness all around, and the BAND!!! We hired The Funktion band for our wedding in May. When I went to meet with Ken I felt like it was too good to be true. The prices were negotiable and he just seemed perfect!!! He was open to all of our ideas and song choices we had in mind. He was also great with advice when we weren’t sure what to play at certain moments in the night. After the meeting, we went on YouTube to listen to samples. Honestly, it’s hard to tell how good a band is online, their live videos are incredible! When the wedding day came and we heard the band live, it was truly amazing! To our amazement, people were getting up on the dance floor within minutes of the reception. They began with a great some great motown that really pulled everyone onto the dance floor and let everyone loosen up before the night began. Throughout the night, our guests continuously told us how much fun they were having and how amazing the band was that we picked. They even asked for the band’s information for their future events. To this day, many of our friends and family still talk about the music they heard that day.

This band is GREAT! All throughout our planning process, Ken was so helpful. We were able to see him at another wedding before signing our contract which was awesome. He was always very responsive to my emails and we had a great meeting with him before the wedding. The day of we got so many compliments on the band, their energy and the singer. THE FUNKTION BAND LIGHTS UP THE SILK CITY
The corner of Main and Ward Streets in Paterson, New Jersey, was transformed into a festive atmosphere of carnival rides, food booths, and vendors. Stores stretching down both venues offered sidewalk sales, and more. Literally thousands of area residents filled the streets, in anticipation of the annual, 4th of July, fireworks display. At center stage was the large band shell from which music had been played, a magician had performed, and even Uncle Sam on stilts had danced.
As the high heat and humidity continued to hover, few noticed as the final band for the evening set up. Most were preoccupied with searching for a cold drink, or simply counting away the time until the pyrotechnic finale. Some that did notice more music on the way, may have, a la, Simon Cowell, thought, “This will be just another karaoke or cruise ship band.”
Nothing from the above could be farther than the truth. From the very first note, in appearance, style, and sound, the Garden State’s own, “The Funktion Band”, literally brought the house down, or should it be said, intersection.
September 14. 1968, marked the first episode of, what would turn out to be, one of the most iconic television shows in history. Often referred to as a, “counter-culture, hippie, undercover cop show,” the series featured three, soon to be superstar, household names-Julie, Pete, and Linc played by Peggy Lipton, Michael Cole, and Clarence Williams III. The trio soon became idols of virtually every teenager in America, not to mention many adults. The show was appropriately entitled, “The Mod Squad.” The hip threesome literally redefined the word, “cool”.
Fast forward to Independence Day, 2013. The moment The Funktion Band took stage, comparison to The Mod Squad was inevitable. The only difference was the players sang, danced, and sported microphones, rather than chased bad guys.
Early on, The Funktion rolled the musical dice by taking a calculated risk. The bass boomed the unmistakable beat of Michael Jackson’s signature hit, “Billie Jean”. Improving on any Michael Jackson song is virtually impossible. Doing such is considered, by many, as almost sacrilegious. However, The Funktion’s version did better than just shoot par. Somehow, frowns and furrowed brows of traditionalists were not only avoided, but seemingly everyone enjoyed the rendition.
Centerpiece was female vocalist. Her counterparts were singers Chandler and Randy. A full band of trumpets, saxophone, keyboard, and drums, completed the harmonious scenario.
She immediately captivated the crowd with her magnetic stage presence. Sporting a vivacious, contagious smile, she quickly conjured up an even closer comparison than that of Peggy Lipton. Funktion’s lead female vocalist could easily be referred to, as, “the second coming of Janet Jackson”. No doubt about it, Ms. King looks like Janet Jackson and moves like Janet Jackson. The only question remaining was soon answered. Ms. King, also, sounds like Janet Jackson. Whether taking lead or back-up, whether with alto or soprano, her vocals seemed to fit every song occasion, as well as Michael’s trademark, white glove.
Not to be outdone, Ms. King’s stage partners would also, certainly, be voted on to Hollywood. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was Chandler. The tall drink of water sported dark pants with matching vest, complimented by a metal, silver, chain, stretching from hip pocket to belt buckle. Add shoulder length hair, comparison to the quintessential, 70’s mainstream rocker, was in order. One could even imagine Blake Shelton’s chair turning around, claiming Chandler for a country prize. However, neither of the former proved most accurate. Chandler’s rich, deep vocals, amazing range, and ease of movement, left only one conclusion, “This man is a true soul singer.” As if walking out of a 1967 recording session with Otis Redding, at Stax Records, in Memphis, Chandler belted out hit after hit. Icing on the cake was provided with his amazing, falsetto rendition of Prince’s, “Kiss”.
Last but not least, Randy, seemed most natural with R&B and Soul selections. Silk shirt and slacks were complimented by a dapper cap, bringing on night shift visions of Marvin Gaye. Such was underscored by Randy’s lead of the Master of Motown’s smash number, “Let’s Get It On.” However, Randy also proved he could turn on his inner Rick James with several funk numbers, including, “Fire”, by the Ohio players.
Not mentioning the choreography of King, Chandler, and Randy, would definitely leave an incomplete picture. The three often swinged and swayed as if not only being in Paterson, but in Detroit, as well. Of particular note was the chemistry between King and Chandler. The pair played perfectly off each other, as if by telepathic communication.
No true funk band would be complete without a brass section. James and Ken with trumpets, and Doug on saxophone, converged at just the right moments. Drummer was steady throughout, accentuating each, and every, genre played. A smooth keyboard was also a constant presence.
Fitting crescendo for the evening were the beautiful fireworks and The Funktion’s universal language of, “We Are Family”, by Sister Sledge.

“My husband and I hired Ken and The Funktion for our wedding in July, 2011. I found them online, listened and enjoyed, and then my husband and I went to see them at two very different venues, and met Ken both times. We knew immediately that they were what we wanted in a band for our wedding at the Molly Pitcher in Red Bank, NJ. The band was spectacular! The best wedding ever attended and folks in the music business that were from New Orleans stated that it was one of the best shows ever seen and they have seen thousands. Somehow you put on a fantastic show with Ailie and Shep as a part of it and I never seen Shep dance before. We cant thank you enough for an unbelievable day. I implore you to give my phone number to any one who might need a referral. Your versions of Edge Of Glory, Rollin In The Deep and Show plus pretty much everything else were worth the price of admission. Just spectacular!!

Are you guys for real? I have never heard or seen a sound that good live in such a beautiful setting. Your vocalists are better than the best and I just want to say “Whitney who”? Stevie Wonder who? When you had my daughter come up and do a song with you it lit up the place like I have never seen. You moved the audience so much both fast and slow, you managed to make members of the US Marines cry!! So much of your attention was given to us that we feel we owe you!

Lili and Jeff beat the odds with Hurricane (or was it a Tropical Storm? Who knows?!?) Danny and had a beautiful beach-side wedding last weekend. Their ceremony was on the beach by the Grand Hotel,followed by the reception in the ballroom up on the top floor, with a stunning view of the coast. Lili and Jeff fit together so nicely, as seen in the images below. Lili is a giggler, and Jeff knows how together going! She had threatened to dig him a hole to stand in so that they would be close in height, so when we stumbled upon a pre-dug one during our photo shoot, obviously we had to take a photo! They opted to see each other before the ceremony and gave me complete control over when and where (LOVE that!) so we had plenty of time to take all the photos we needed. Lili’s maid of honor was her niece, and she wrote a beautiful poem for her speech. The cool dude in the hat with the groomsmen is her nephew. Jeff’s aunt performed their ceremony and there were gasps from the crowd when he broke the glass with his BAREFEET!!! I had the pleasure of working with videographer Andrew King of Stomping Bread Productions and kept the dance floor packed and wild all night!

We keep looking through friends pictures of our wedding to see all the funny moments. We’ve got pictures of the ceremony, the cocktail hour, first dance, father daughter dance and cake cutting. None of the actual party. Why? BECAUSE EVERYONE WAS DANCING! Surely a good problem to have. Everyone keeps raving about how great the band was. I’m still amazed that the Funktion could get people from 10 – 80 to dance to “Love Tran” and a Rihanna/Whitney Houston Mash Up. What a great experience with the Funktion!

The Funktion Band was in one word AMAZING! My fiance and I really wanted an awesome band that would keep the party going and have all our guests dancing. I researched a LOT of wedding bands in the NJ/NYC area and I came across The Funktion online during my research. We watched a few of their video clips online and we were immediately hooked! They definitely stood out among all the other bands which seemed so similar. The Funktion has a unique edge to them, and every band member is extremely talented! Once we reached out and met with Ken the trumpet player, he was so easy to work with! We are both really into Music, and Ken worked with all our requests. They played such a variety of music that EVERYONE, I really mean everyone was on the dance floor the entire night!!! We actually wanted them to keep playing when the night ended, because the party was still going strong! Their brass section is second to none and the vocalists on point. The trombone player was the BEST and was dancing up a storm with us! Everyone said they were one of the best wedding bands they’ve heard. If I could do it again, I’d definitely hire the Funktion! You won’t be disappointed!

Ken, with the Funktion, was awesome to work with. From the beginning he was extremely responsive over email and when it came to work out the details for our wedding he was great. The music was extremely important at our wedding and we wanted everyone dancing the whole night and that’s exactly what we got! The energy the band brought was amazing and their sound was spot on. Our guests are still raving about the band. The ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception were executed better than I could have imagined and the Funktion worked with our DJ seamlessly. The thing I appreciated most was that they didn’t need much direction for me at a time when my other wedding vendors were asking a million questions. I just gave them the play/ don’t play list and they completely understood our vision. Also, I appreciated them learning our favorite songs as well. I booked the band based on the performance I experienced at the friend’s wedding last year, and the service experience provided for my wedding matched the amazing performance. We will be recommending the Funktion to all of our friends!

Awesome, amazing, wonderful band! Everyone was dancing before we even got into the room, and continued for the entire night. All my guests kept asking “How did you find them?” and raving about how great they were! Ken was helpful throughout the planning process and always responded quickly to any questions I had, he also was able to work with our budget, play a wide variety of music, and sing all of our special requests. The Funktion made my wedding the incredibly fun, more like a party (which is exactly what we were going for). They will work to make your wedding special and exactly what you want. If you watch them play you can really see they love what they do, they have fun, they bring high energy, smiles, great music, and you won’t be able to resist the urge to dance!
